Megakaryocytes & bone marrow models in disease discovery

Megakaryocytes and Bone Marrow environment

Platelets derived from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow play a central role in key physiological functions. However, there are many platelet-related diseases for which there are only palliative therapies, resulting in serious complications and side effects.

Studying the mechanisms of functional platelet formation from megakaryocytes will provide new options for therapeutic interventions. In our laboratory, we pursue the understanding of these mechanisms by connecting medicine with biology, biotechnology, and bioengineering.

Our goals

We are building a cross-sectional program that integrates biological and bioengineering techniques into the study of hematopoiesis, blood cell production, and bone marrow environment.

The lab

Founded in 2007, the lab is based in two distinct academic institutions: the Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of Pavia and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University in Boston (USA)

Our team is young, international, and multidisciplinary with clinical, bioengineering, and biological backgrounds. The lab's structure and organization allow us to practice an interdisciplinary, multi-cultural, and flexible research approach favoring innovation and scientific creativity.

A blood story

We are committed to focusing our efforts on basic research, also called pure or fundamental research, to improve scientific theories and better understand underlying human processes.

We believe that a pure understanding of the origins of platelet biogenesis and the factors that govern, influence, and control this fundamental aspect of our lives, can provide the keys for applied research to develop technology and techniques that can improve science and clinical approaches.
